Why it’s Offensive to Call a Black Woman Aunt Jemima
Problematic Monday- I explain why it is problematic to tell a black woman she looks like Aunt Jemima then tell her she isn’t educated enough to realize it was actually a compliment.

Very glad that the word “ enslaved person” makes non black American people feel more comfortable when discussing slavery. 🙄 Slave fits better due to its connotation. It’s a negative, heavy, dirty word. It should sound dehumanizing because that’s what chattel slavery was. They( majority of white Europeans settlers and very few Native American tribes) literally saw us as non human or only part human. Slavery is the epitome of a dehumanizing experience. The word and idea of a “slave” should make one uncomfortable. My ancestors were “slaves” when they used our babies as gator bait. They were “slaves when they striped us of our name/land/culture, we were “slaves” when white women would bash the skulls of the mixed race children their husbands and overseers kept making. Pulled apart by dogs and used for various scientific experiments

It's definitely a lack of empathy. As well as unchecked privilege. There have been untold number of stories about the Holocaust that are designed to deliver strong emotional gut punches, for good reason. There haven't been anywhere near ENOUGH stories that center slavery or First Nations/Native American genocide and trauma (i.e. the horrors of the residential schools) in a similar way. And that's because systemic racism is STILL going strong

@NotYourMommasHistory , have you ever had a moment during rehearsal or reenactment where you wanted to cry or it was too much you needed a minute because of experiencing to some degree what the slaves went through? listening to the narrative was easy watching it happen hits way different from a movie... there is something about seeing it to a degree live, its hard. just wondering if it ever hits you some type of way

If there was No equsi soup that is mentioned anywhere in our cultural foods why are you cooking it. You should be cooking traditional Black American Cultural dishes of that time...this did not sit well with me. There are too many meals that you could have prepared. It makes me question if you are Black American.

Why say enslaved person instead of slave? Slave is a person, it's just a slower way of saying the same thing. Using enslaver instead of owner though is smart

You're trivializing and romanticizing a dark period in American history. What you're presenting as an educational insight into the everyday lives of a wronged community can actually desensitize viewers to one of the greatest tragedies in the history of mankind. The music you've used is inappropriately upbeat. This video resemble something a regency channel like English Heritage or a satirical platform like The Onion or SNL would produce. There's nothing 'everyday' or 'routinely' about slavery. You're doing a disservice to your own history.

My grandmother would often tell us the stories about how life was for her and she said you did what you was told and you had to do it right. You didn’t speak only listened and if you was asked a question you only answered with a yes or no sir or yes or no ma’am. You couldn’t express how you felt about anything, punishment was very harsh if you did so.

I have some conflicting feelings about this interview. I think it is really nice that you had this conversation with your friend Abby. You tried not to judge and let her explain! She was uncomfortable and tried to hide it by laughing. But as a German, I would never laugh like that about WW2 or the Holocaust. I understand, laughing in this context is for Abby a coping mechanism. It is not easy to open up to your mistakes on camera, on the internet, and also in front of your Black friend. I really get this. But seeing now that she has a whole RUclips channel that focuses on history, it is kind of baffling how little apparently White people in the US take their own history serious. My country and culture are not perfect at all, but I do think that in Germany, we get much more sensitized about our history when we grow up. Nobody laughs about these topics. Even if you don't know the history of plantations well, which maybe was the case for the Swedish ex-husband, how can you not just ONCE question the history of this place? I don't believe she (or her ex-husband) was that ignorant (lacking knowledge and awareness), I think she just did not care. THAT would have been honest to admit. Because that is what most of us do. We think about this or that and how it is kind of bad but then we justify it through other things and/or just decide not to care. That is not the same as being truly ignorant, which I believe some people are.
